How this guide is written

Sources

This guide is written from primary sources. For the law, that means the General Statutes as published by the North Carolina General Assembly on ncleg.gov, cited by section and linked to the section's own page. For court procedure, forms and fees, it means the North Carolina Judicial Branch on nccourts.gov, including the Administrative Office of the Courts' court costs chart and its official forms.

For licenses, hearings and DMV fees, the source is the NCDMV on ncdot.gov; for insurance points, the North Carolina Department of Insurance; for the DWI assessment rules and provider lists, the Department of Health and Human Services; for Durham facts, Durham County, City of Durham and Sheriff's Office pages and the courts' Durham County pages; for population, the U.S. Census Bureau. Crash data comes from NCDOT's Traffic Crash Facts and county crash profiles, and conviction data from the NC Sentencing and Policy Advisory Commission's annual DWI reports.

Law-firm pages are never the source of a number, a deadline or a rule on this site. Where a news report is the only source for a local event, the page says so.

Numbers

Every figure on this site traces to a named source: a statute section, a fee chart, a report with its year, or a Census table. Where this guide computes a figure itself, such as a percentage from two published counts or a total from the lines of a fee chart, the page labels it as arithmetic on the published figures. Dollar figures are quoted as the statute or the chart prints them.

Where a figure could not be verified, the page says the guide could not confirm it rather than guessing. Two examples at the time of writing: which courtroom hears Durham DWI cases, and the main phone number of the Durham County Detention Facility.

Dates

Every page shows the date it was published and the date it was last reviewed. Statutes are checked against the General Assembly's own currency statement: at the last review, the General Statutes page stated that they include changes through S.L. 2026-30, and each cited section's history note was recorded as well. Fee figures carry the effective date of the chart they come from: the court costs on this site are from the chart in effect January 1, 2026, and the NCDMV restoration fees reflect the 2024 quadrennial adjustment, with the next due July 1, 2028.

What this guide will not do

• It does not give legal advice or tell you what to do in your case. It explains what the law provides and points to where a lawyer can be found.
• It does not predict outcomes. Where it describes what usually happens, it cites the data.
• It does not use the adjectives of lawyer advertising, and it never promises a result.
• It does not publish testimonials, reviews or case results.
• It does not ask for the facts of your case anywhere on the site; the contact form collects only a name, a phone number, an email address, the county and the court date.
• It does not link to law firms, directories or news sites in the body of a page; external links go only to sources.

Corrections

Send a correction through the contact page, naming the page and the fact. A correction is checked against the primary source, the page is changed and the last-reviewed date is updated; a fact that can no longer be verified is removed. Pages are re-reviewed when a statute changes, when a new fee chart or dataset is published, or when a reader reports an error.

Independence

Durham County DWI Guide is published by Luxe Club LLC. No lawyer or law firm pays to appear on this site today, and none is listed. The phone number and the message form reach the publisher, not a lawyer. If a lawyer is ever listed here, every page that names the lawyer will disclose that the listing is paid, and this policy will say so the same day. Until then, the only referral this site points to is the NC Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service, run by the bar association and not by us. About this guide says who we are.
